Reading Copilot

Reading Copilot is a hands-free AI reading assistant for physical books.

Core trick

Event-based page captures are sent to Firebase AI Logic, which answers questions grounded in the current page and appends to per-book memory.

Description

Reading Copilot is a hands-free AI reading assistant for physical books. Using Meta Ray-Ban or phone camera capture, it lets readers ask questions about the page in front of them, translate pointed words, and automatically build a lightweight memory of what they have read. The problem we solve is that physical books are hard to search, summarize, or ask contextual questions about without breaking reading flow. Reading Copilot turns short, event-based page captures into page-grounded answers, summaries, page updates, and a “So Far” memory trail.

# Reading Copilot

Universal learning copilot for physical books — Meta Ray-Ban capture, Firebase AI Logic brain, per-book memory, mindmap + So Far card.

## Setup

1. Create a Firebase project and register iOS bundle `dev.illuminate.ReadingCopilot`.
2. Download `GoogleService-Info.plist` → `App/GoogleService-Info.plist` (gitignored). **Must be present in the app bundle** — without it cloud features stay offline-only.
3. Copy `App/GoogleService-Info.example.plist` as a template for public repo.
4. Open `ReadingCopilot.xcodeproj`, select your team, build for device.

### Firebase console (required for cloud AI)

1. **Firebase AI Logic** — enable in Firebase console (Gemini Developer API / Google AI backend).
2. **Firestore** — create database if you plan to sync events later.
3. **Remote Config** (optional) — defaults are baked in; override keys if needed:
   - `model.pageReader` → `gemini-3.5-flash`
   - `model.intentRouter` → `gemini-3.5-flash`
4. **App Check** — required for Firebase AI Logic client calls:
   - Enable the **Firebase App Check API** in [Google Cloud Console](https://console.cloud.google.com/apis/library/firebaseappcheck.googleapis.com) for your Firebase/GCP project (403 errors mean this API is still disabled).
   - Firebase console → **App Check** → register the iOS app with the **Debug** provider (for local dev).
   - Add debug token: `3B0B8341-92C7-450B-A9B9-7755201E7638` (also set in `App/Info.plist` as `FIRAppCheckDebugToken` for a stable dev token).
