SID

The SID (Sensor for Infant Defense) application transforms standard video monitors into proactive safety systems by using advanced artificial intelligence to analyze an infant's sleep in real-time.

Core trick

Video frames are analyzed for chest-movement breathing signals and prone or bedding hazards, triggering phone alerts on detection.

Description

The SID (Sensor for Infant Defense) application transforms standard video monitors into proactive safety systems by using advanced artificial intelligence to analyze an infant's sleep in real-time. It continuously monitors for subtle chest movements associated with breathing and detects if the baby rolls onto their stomach or if hazardous bedding is present in the crib. Upon identifying these critical risks or a potential absence of breathing, SID instantly alerts parents via their smartphones, enabling immediate intervention. This addresses a crucial gap in conventional baby monitors that rely on human vigilance and cannot detect subtle, silent dangers. By automating the detection of key SIDS risk factors, SID aims to provide true peace of mind and, most importantly, prevent tragic sleep-related infant deaths.

# Smarter Infant Detector (SIDs)

**AI-powered baby sleep monitor that detects SIDS risk factors in real time using Google Gemini and the Vercel AI SDK.**

Built for the Google x Vercel AI Hackathon.

## The Problem

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the leading cause of death among infants between one month and one year of age in the United States. Every year, approximately 3,400 infants die suddenly and unexpectedly. While commercial baby monitors exist, they suffer from two critical shortcomings:

1. **Excessive false alarms.** Clip-on oxygen sensors and movement pads trigger alerts from normal infant behavior, desensitizing parents to real danger.
2. **Reactive, not proactive.** Traditional monitors detect a problem *after* it happens (e.g., breathing has already stopped). They don't identify *environmental hazards* that increase SIDS risk before they become emergencies — loose blankets drifting toward a baby's face, a baby rolling onto their stomach, stuffed animals in the crib.

Parents lose sleep over false alerts. And the alerts they do get arrive too late.

## The Solution

Smarter Infant Detector uses **Google Gemini's multimodal vision capabilities** to analyze a live video feed of a sleeping baby and assess SIDS risk factors the way a pediatric sleep safety expert would — continuously, proactively, and with context.

Instead of relying on a single sensor, it evaluates the full scene:

- **Sleep position** — Is the baby on their back (safe), side, or stom
